950 million text messages in the UK last month -
(Not all of them through sms2gsm.com, it just feels like it!):

A total of 950 million text messages were sent in the UK during June. The Mobile Data Association figures show the number of messages sent across the four UK networks has almost doubled since the same time last year. Approximately 32 million chargeable messages are being sent across the UK's four mobile phone networks each day. June's total brings the total so far for this year to 5.3 billion.

The prodigious growth of SMS has been reflected in a number of high profile promotions announced this week. Both Nescafe and Cadburys announced SMS advertising campaigns calculated to appeal to the youth market. From August Cadburys consumers will be invited to send codes printed inside wrappers for the chance of winning an instant prize, while Nescafe announced it is to sponsor a new SMS reply service operated by Lycos UK.

Misuse: Over the weekend, we had our first attack/misuse incident. This is a FREE service with nothing to be gained by messing things up other than removing a service that many people find very helpful. The solution to get rid of the 'bad' element of users is to turn the service into a subscription based service. We are now considering this as an option. Registrations have temporarily be suspended.

RED Worm: The complete story.
posted by Steve 6:28 AM

Worm Warning: August 1st Midnight will see an attack of the entire Internet that has not been seen before, in form of the Code Red worm sms2gsm.com engineers are working against the clock to prevent this attack, aided by our upstream bandwidth providers and, more generally, by the entire Internet community, but this is a race against time and a race that we may well lose. sms2gsm.com systems may be swamped by network traffic generated by infected Microsoft IIS servers, which will mean our website appears to be offline and your short messages may not get through. We are however standing by to resolve the attack tonight.

Let us make it quite clear: the worm infects only Microsoft IIS web servers, which have a well-documented history of security exploits
and vulnerabilities. At sms2gsm.com we do not use IIS servers. .

Some reports suggest that already 300,000 IIS servers are infected, which should once and for all serve as a lesson of why people should not use Microsoft IIS servers in the first place. Rest assured that we do not use any IIS servers as we are a complete Unix house; no servers have been compromised.

Operator Logos: We were recently asked by a client 'How do I reset an operator logo after installing a new logo via the Logo editor?' Listed below you will find a manual way of doing this. We will shortly implement a system that will make the process much easier for you at the click of a button.

1). Go to the sms2gsm.com Logo editor page. (Must be a registered user)
2). Put anything like a dot or a line on the logo editor.
3). Click the send button and enter the mobile number you wish to reset back to the original operator logo.
4). Select Operator Logo and then select the WRONG operator for the recipient phone.
e.g. If the recipient phone is Vodafone, select Cellnet etc.
5). Send the icon and get the person with the recipient phone to save the icon.

As the icon has the wrong operator identified, the phone will revert to the original operator logo.

EMS: The Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) is the ability to send and receive a combination of simple melodies, pictures, sounds, animations, modified text and standard text as an integrated message for display on an EMS compliant handset.

EMS is an enhancement to SMS but is very similar to SMS in terms of using the store and forward SMS Centers, the signaling channel and the like to realise EMS. EMS supports several simple media in standardized formats:

Text Formatting
EMS supports not just plain text but left, center or right alignments of text, normal, large or small font sizes and normal, bold, italic, underlined or strikethrough text.

Pictures
EMS supports three picture formats: small (16 by 16 pixels), large (32 by 32 pixels) or variable sized pictures. The standards recommend a maximum picture size of 96 by 64 pixels. This depends upon the handset vendor’s implementation. Pictures are plain black and white; there is no grey scale for shading.

Sounds
Within EMS, there are 10 different predefined sounds including low and high chimes and chords, Ding, TaDa, Claps, Drum and Notify. Additionally, user-defined sounds are possible which can be transferred over the air and take up to 128 bytes.

Animations
Moving pictures will be supported by EMS, in two sizes, small (8 by 8 pixels) and large (16 by 16 pixels). Handset vendors may implement methods for repeating these animations. The standards define a number of predefined animations, relating to sadness, flirtatiousness, gladness, scepticism and grief. User-defined animations are also possible in both large and small formats.

Technology
EMS has been standardized by extending the use of the long established and widely used User Data Header (UDH) common in SMS. EMS has little or no impact on today’s SMS Centers. The introduction of EMS should be totally transparent to SMS Centers since they already support the User Data Header.

The principal modification to existing SMS Centers would be in the case that mobile network operators wanted to charge differently for EMS. In such a case, the SMS Center would need to record the relevant technical values and generate Call Detail Records for billing purposes accordingly. Some network operators have indeed started investigating whether they can change their charging policy for EMS compared with SMS. They would like to charge for one enhanced message, instead of several SMS. One EMS may be made up of several short messages.

Time Frame
• 4th quarter 2001: Commercial volumes of EMS terminals begin shipping.
• 2002/3: EMS will have reached critical mass in terms of installed base of EMS capable terminals.

sms2gsm.com
Will be a platform that supports EMS. Suitable interfaces will enable you to transmit EMS messages to GSM mobile phones all over the world. All customers will be informed by SMS as soon as EMS will be supported by sms2gsm.com (planned 4Q2001).
